Ernest Burden III

A San Francisco, CA native, Ernest Burden is an internationally recognized artist specializing in architectural imagery.  A leader in the New York City illustration market for more than forty years, he has worked with influential architects, engineers and civil authorities to provide visual works that advance the understanding of proposed structures in the public sphere.  His rendering career and illustration work bridges traditional and digital media.  Burden ushered in new imaging standards for the digital age by bringing aspects of the softness and nuance of hand applied media into precise digital images and animations. New works are again focusing on traditional methods, with multiple works in process depicting real and imagined spaces.
Ernest lives and works just north of NYC in New York's Hudson Valley, always scanning the skies for interesting planes and resident Bald Eagles.

Statement

Whether around the curving walls of terminals or across the stone of borough streets, a clear light passes through Ernest Burden’s drawings, not simply attributable to lightness of hand or paper. Light often acts as both an impasse and an invisible fellow passenger, clarifying immutable truths, yet transient and transitory as it wraps around the sleek wings of aircraft or skips under a bridge. Light not only illuminates places traversed or traversing itself, but it reveals the radical frankness of trajectories both biographical and borne by a 9B pencil. Light reveals not only distance, but how the ghostly distance of passing decades and the sharp, clear distances measured by footsteps or flight paths are often one and the same.
